Day 01 Arrival in Seoul / Stay in Incheon Airport Town Arrive in Seoul at Inchoen International Airport, where you will be met by our representative and transfer to your hotel. If arrival time is in the morning, you may arrange birding in Gangwha Island in afternoon. Day 02 Incheon / Gangwha Island / Onyang After breakfast, transfer to Gangwha Island and visit Eastern part of Gangwha Island for briding. Afternoon transfer to Onyang via West Coast Expressway. Check-in to hotel in Onyang Day 03 Onyang / The Geumgang River and Estuary / Mokpo After breakfast, take a coach ride to the Geumgang River and estuary for watching Eastern Oystercatcher; almost 3,000 Eastern Oystercatchers were recorded during 8 surveys in 1998-1999. Birds can be watching in this estuary are Baikal Teal and Swan Goose. After half day watching time, transfer to Mokpo for overnight stay Day 04 Mokpo / Haenam Lake / Mokpo After breakfast, transfer to Haenam Lake. The Haenam region is located in the southwest of the South of Korea and consists of relict tidal-flat areas, extensive rice-fields and three reclamation lakes. One of these, Yongam Lake, has the last significant remaining areas of reed bed and shallow pools. The Haenam region is most probably the most important wintering area for waterfowl nationwide with an estimated 300,000 plus individuals and 7 species in internationally important concentrations (as defined by the Ramsar Convention). The most significant of these is the Baikal Teal Anas Formosa. 168,000 were counted in January1999. 160% of the suspected world population! With continuing degradation of other areas in Haenam, most of the waterfowl this winter are concentrated into a few hundred hectares of Yongam Lake, at Danduri. Return to Mokpo for overnight stay Day 05 Mokpo / Sunchon Bay / Masan After breakfast, transfer to Sunchon Bay for watching Hooded Crane, 90-100 were recorded in February 1999. Full day will be spent here until we transfer to Masan via Expressway. Overnight in Masan Day 06 Masan / Junam Reservoirs / Busan After breakfast, transfer to Junam Reservoirs, 30 minutes north-east of Masan City for full day bird watching. Birds can be seen here are Baikal Teal (5000 recorded in 1999), White-naped Crane, and Taiga Bean Goose. Transfer to Busan for overnight stay. Day 07 Busan / Nakdong River Estuary / Busan After breakfast, visit Nakdong River Estuary for White- winged Scoter with a rented boat in Nakdong river delta area. Return to Busan for overnight stay. Day 08 Busan / Guryongpo / Gyeongju Breakfast at hotel, transfer to Guryongpo by coach ride along the East Coast. North of the harbour town of Guryongpo is one of the most obvious flandscape features of the whole coast. For birders looking for grebes, divers and cormorants, and even migrants, this stretch of coastline might be one of the best general areas. Check-in at hotel in Gyeongju. Day 09 Gyeongju / Seoul After breakfast, transfer back to Seoul. Journey takes about 4 hours by coach. Upon arrival, check-in to the hotel for rest. Balance of the day is at leisure. Overnight in Seoul. Day 10 Seoul / Vicinity of Seoul - Gwangnung Forest & Imjingang River After breakfast, drive to north-east of Seoul for an hour for visiting Kwangnung Forest, where you can most probably see White-bellied Black Woodpecker. After morning bird- watching, proceed to Imjingak, near our borderline with North Korea for a chance for waterfowl, with 3 species of geese in internationally important concentrations in this western Han and Imjingang River area. Most exceptionally these included Swan Geese (their peak month is usually November). Then back to Seoul via Odusan Observatory for a view of North Korea. Overnight in Seoul. Day 11 Seoul / Departure After breakfast, free at leisure until transfer time to the airport. Check-in 2 hours before departure time is recommended. |
